The Science of the "Stuck" Door: Thermal Expansion

The biggest enemy of your uPVC door isn't necessarily a burglar; it’s the British weather. We’ve just come out of a winter that was likely damp, freezing, and harsh. Now, as the sun starts to hit those door frames, things begin to move.

uPVC is a fantastic material, it’s durable and keeps the heat in, but it is also highly susceptible to "thermal expansion and contraction." During the winter, the material shrinks slightly. As we move into spring and the temperatures rise, the frame and the door leaf expand.

If your door was already a tiny bit out of alignment, this expansion is the tipping point. Suddenly, the hooks and bolts of your multipoint locking system don’t line up perfectly with the "keeps" (the metal slots in the frame). This is when you start feeling that familiar resistance. If you’re having to "heave" the handle up or put your shoulder into the door just to turn the key, that’s your door crying out for help.

Winter can be brutal on the rubber gaskets that keep the draughts out of your home. If these seals have perished or become unseated, you'll start feeling a chill even as the weather warms up.

Another thing I always check for my local customers is the drainage holes. If you open your door and look at the bottom of the frame, you’ll see little slots. These are designed to let rainwater escape. Over autumn and winter, these often get plugged with dirt, dead leaves, or grit from the roads. If they’re blocked, water can pool inside the frame, which eventually leads to internal rust or even dampness inside your hallway.
