The most common sign? A mountain of mail on the doormat. If you have a glass panel on your front door, it’s incredibly easy for someone to see a pile of takeaway menus and letters stacking up. Lighting is your best friend. Leaving one hall light on for three days straight is actually a bit of a giveaway. Instead, use smart plugs or traditional segment timers. Set them to turn on a lamp in the living room in the evening and maybe a light in a bedroom for an hour before "bedtime." It creates the illusion of movement and a daily routine.
The "Bin" Trick If your bin collection day falls while you’re away, ask a neighbor if they wouldn't mind putting yours out and, more importantly, pulling it back in. An empty bin left on the pavement for two days after the lorry has passed is a massive green flag for someone looking for an empty house.
2. The "Double-Check" Lockdown

Before you leave, do a "security lap" of your property. Check:
The Garage: Is the internal door to the house locked? Is the main garage door secured?
The Shed: Do you have expensive bikes or tools in there? Ensure they are locked up, as these are often the first things targeted.
Windows: Check the upstairs ones too. People often forget bathroom windows or those small top-lights.
Side Gates: If you have a gate leading to your back garden in Rugeley or Burntwood, make sure it’s bolted from the inside.
If any of your locks feel "crunchy" or difficult to turn, don’t force them. It’s usually a sign that the mechanism is failing or the door has dropped. Digital privacy is a huge part of physical security these days. Even if your profile is set to "friends only," you never know who is seeing those posts or who your friends might be showing them to.
My advice? Be a "retro" poster. Take all the photos you want, but wait until you’re back on your sofa in Cannock before you hit upload. Not only does it keep your home safer, but it also lets you actually enjoy the moment while you're away!
4. Check Your Visual Deterrents
A burglar wants an easy life. If they see a house that looks like a "hard target," they’ll likely move on. This is where visual deterrents come in.
The Alarm: If you have one, use it! Make sure the external bell box is clean and looks functional. If the lights on it are flashing, it shows the system is active.
CCTV and Doorbells: If you have a video doorbell or cameras, make sure they are charged and the lenses are clean. There’s no point in having a camera if it’s covered in cobwebs or the battery died two weeks ago.
Signage: Even a small sticker in the window saying "CCTV in Operation" can be enough to make someone think twice.
If you’re in an area like Burton Upon Trent or Burntwood and you don’t have any visible security, it might be time to think about a simple upgrade. Even a dummy camera can work, though I always recommend the real deal for the best protection.
5. Be a Good Neighbor (and Ask for the Same)

Before you head off, have a quick chat with the folks next door. Tell them when you’re leaving and when you’ll be back. Give them a spare key if you trust them, so they can check the house if they hear anything suspicious.
If you have a driveway and you’re taking your only car, ask a neighbor if they want to park their second car on your drive while you’re gone. It’s a win-win: they get a premium parking spot, and your house looks like there’s someone home.
